The Pixy CMUcam5 is a remarkably versatile and incredibly quick image sensor designed to take all of the difficulty out of real time image processing. This camera can be taught to track objects in various sizes, shapes, and colors with the press of a button. The Pixy can track hundreds of objects simultaneously and is ideally suited for applications in robotics and automation.
The onboard NXP LPC4330 processor scans an entire 640 x 400 image every 20 milliseconds (50 frames per second). Because the Pixy uses its own on-board processor, only the desired information is passed along to the connected device. The output data is sent 50 times per second and can be received through a variety of interfaces: Serial UART, SPI, I2C, USB, or Digital / Analog output. This variety of outputs means the Pixy CMUcam5 is compatible with everything from basic Arduinos and other microcontrollers, to single board computers like the Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone, and even standard desktop and laptop computers!
Pixy uses a color-based filtering algorithm to track objects. The Pixy calculates hue and saturation of each pixel from the camera. The hue of an object remains largely unchanged when the lighting / exposure changes. This makes Pixy able to continue working even when lighting and exposure changes – something many color-based filtering systems have trouble with!
