ESP8266 WiFi Module
The ESP8266 is a great little Wi-Fi module that gives any microcontroller access to your Wi-Fi network – think of it as a UART to Wi-Fi adapter! In cases where just a couple of pins are required, the ESP8266 can even be directly connected to sensors to broadcast the data as a standalone Wi-Fi web server. The ESP8266 can be programmed directly using the available SDK (advanced) or through the Arduino IDE (V1.6.3). This is by far one of the lowest cost options for Wi-Fi connectivity in your IoT project!
Due to the configuration of the header pins on this board it is not breadboard compatible. We do recommend picking up a set of Male – Female Jumper wires. The board itself runs on 3.3VDC and is NOT 5VDC compatible so a Logic Level Shifter is recommended along with a decent 3.3VDC regulator. This board cannot be connected to the 3.3VDC supply on your Arduino, the 300mA+ spikes of the ESP8266 will make short work of it!
